Meet Lucky Dog, Rickey

Meet Rickey: The Tripawd Wonder Pup

“Life is short. Always chase squirrels, or lizards, or pretty much anything that moves.” That seems to be Rickey’s motto.
This three-legged bundle of energy has never let missing a limb stop him from living large. Rickey was found on the Big Island of Hawaii with his front right foot caught in an illegal pig snare. Thanks to the heroic efforts of local rescuers, he was brought to the Hawaii Island Humane Society where his leg was amputated. But Rickey’s story didn’t end there—it was just getting started.
Through a sister shelter partnership between Hawaii Island Humane Society, Paws Across Water Hawaii, and Berkeley Humane, Rickey boarded a flight to the mainland and landed in the arms of his future family. Fostered and immediately adopted (aka foster failed) by Allyson and Thomas last May, he quickly proved to be the best decision they ever made.
As a regular at Oakland United Beerworks, you would often find him mingling with the humans, lounging in the sun, or performing one of his signature back-rolls—legs in the air, booty shaking with zero shame.
True to his namesake, Rickey Henderson—the legendary Oakland A’s base-stealing GOAT—this Rickey is known for stealing hearts. With a striking brindle coat and the most expressive ears you’ve ever seen, he’s a total showstopper. Those ears alone could (and do!) carry their own Instagram account—check out all of Rickey’s goofy poses, big smiles, and daily adventures at @rickey.roo. Trust us, one scroll through and you’ll be completely smitten.
Rickey’s got a few quirks too. He loathes car rides (they often end in vomit, to everyone’s dismay) and has a mind of his own. His off-leash time is limited, not for lack of enthusiasm, but due to his habit of sprinting toward bars, restaurants, and coffee shops where he knows treats await. His recall is… selective. But hey, he knows what he wants!
When Rickey sleeps, his tongue pokes right out between his canines, dangling like a little flag of peace and derpy contentment. And despite being down a leg, he fits himself into the most improbable sleeping positions—jamming his head between chair legs and couch cushions like it’s the coziest nook in the world. His ability to look comfortable in the most uncomfortable places is a truly enviable talent.
But perhaps what’s most inspiring about Rickey is how seamlessly he adapted to his new body. Just two months post-amputation, he was charging into his new life with joy and curiosity. For Thomas, who suffered a spinal cord injury 13 years ago that resulted in quadriplegia, Rickey’s resilience struck a deep chord. Watching Rickey navigate the world without hesitation or bitterness was a quiet reminder that different doesn’t mean less. It means learning new ways to thrive.
Rickey lives his life with wild joy, wiggly determination, and unapologetic affection. He’s a dog who teaches us all to roll on our backs, shake what we got, and face each day with a big goofy smile.
We’re lucky to know him. And now, thanks to his upcoming feature on our Lucky Dog Hazy IPA label, you can know him too.
